Abstract
The purified protein-free liver extracts have been used for past many years in the treatment of both acute and chronic liver diseases. Adelavin¢ç was protein-free liver extract. For the evaluation of the therapeutic effect of Adelavin,¢ç this clinical study was carried out for 30 adult patients with histologically proven chronic active hepatitis. This patients were randomly allocated into two groups consisting of Adelavin¢ç group of 20 cases and control group of 10 cases.
In Adelavin¢ç group 1 ample (1 ml) of Adelavin¢ç mixed with 5% dextrose in water 500cc was injected intravenously for 1 week followed by intramuscular injection for 3 weeks. Liver biopsy was carried out in 8 patients of Adelavin¢ç group before and after 4 weeks of treatment.
The results were as follows.
1. In Adelavin¢ç group there was more than moderate degree of improvement of subjective symptoms in 80.0%, objective findings in 80.0%, liver function in 70.0%, overall improvement in 75.0% and usefulness in 75.0%.
2. There was a statistically significant difference in improvement of SGOT at the second, third and fourth week of treatment and SGPT at the third and fourth week in Adelavin¢ç group comparing to the control group. Among HBsAg positive patients there showed more improvement of SGOT at the third week of the treatment and more improvement of SGPT at every week of the treatment from the first to fourth week in Adelavin¢ç group than in control group.
3. Among 8 cases of Adelavin¢ç group undergone liver biopsy before and after treatment of four weeks, one case was converted from chronic active hepatitis to chronic persistent hepatitis. The fibrosis, piecemeal necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration were slightly more decreased in 4 cases, but no remarkable change in 3 cases.
